Lily Tomlin will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 53rd annual ICG Publicists Awards Luncheon to be held February 26 at the Beverly Hilton.
“Tomlin is being recognized for an exceptional career that dates back to ‘Rowan And Martin’’s Laugh-In’ and led her to become one of America’’s foremost performers across an ever-changing range of media –– television, movies, theater, animation and video,”” said Awards Committee Chairman Henri Bollinger.
Tomlin’s iconic characters Ernestine, an irascible telephone operator, and Edith Ann, a devilish 6-year-old, made their mark on NBC’s Laugh-Inmore than 40 years ago. This year she was nominated for two Golden Globes – — lead actress in a comedy series for Netflix’’s Grace And Frankie and lead actress in a comedy film for Sony Classics’’ Grandma. In between she has received five Emmys, a Writers Guild Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.
Tomlin made her Broadway debut in 1977 with Appearing Nitely, written and directed by her partner Jane Wagner and adapted as both an album and an HBO special. Her next Broadway appearance was in The Search For Signs Of Intelligent Life In The Universe, which ran SRO for a year.
She was Oscar-nominated for her work in Robert Altman’’s Nashville (1975), her film debut. Since then she has starred in dozens of movies, including 9 To 5, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, the film adaptation of The Search For Signs Of Intelligent Life in the Universe, Woody Allen’’s Shadows And Fog, Short Cuts, I Heart Huckabees and Pink Panther II.
“Lily Tomlin is a national treasure,” said ICG President Steven Poster. “She has brought laughter and tears to generations, and I’m delighted that she continues to do so with her unique flair.””
As previously announced, Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films, will receive the Motion Picture Showmanship Award. The Television Showmanship Award goes to John Landgraf, FX Networks CEO, and a Special Award of Merit will be presented to lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman.
